This textbook presents the experience of development, transformation and improvement of higher education in the United States of America (XX-XXI centuries). The aim of this textbook is to acquaint students of different majors – history, education, psychology, philosophy, as well as students of economics, entrepreneurship, engineering and natural sciences – with the processes of development, improvement and transformation of higher education at the USA during the period lasting from the last decade of the 20th till the first decade of the 21st century. An important purpose of this textbook is to demonstrate to the students the distinguishing features and peculiarities of American higher education establishments – universities, colleges and other institutions – during the times when American society is strongly interested in acquiring new knowledge, professions, as well as in strengthening the prestige, economics, and safety of the country.

The book studies the role and interrelationship of higher education and science in the USA, as well as the history of emergence and use of new science and technologies. Characteristic features and peculiarities of American higher education, the history of its origin, establishment and development as well as the results of private capital’s influence on higher education with higher education establishments becoming educational corporations are presented. Different topics are examined including American experience in educational management, leadership education, marketing activity of universities and colleges, introduction of new concept of education, the level of financing of higher education, types of education including on-line  education. The issues of academic freedom, educational quality and educational content, organization of bachelor’s and master’s programs, the principles of choosing of a major and building a professional career are studied. The influence of the market of educational services and needs and wants of the American society on higher education establishments, as well as commercialization of educational services and research are analyzed. The principles of selection of students and the educational quality control are researched as well. The questions of financing of higher education, public and private higher education dichotomy and its effect on the quality of education, as well as rivalry and competitiveness in American education market are analyzed. Great examples of Ivy League universities are presented. Distinguishing features of community colleges, private sector of American higher education, profit and not-profit universities are examined. The problems of internalization of the system of American higher education, principles of academic preparation of professors, accreditation, as well as application of the Law of Higher Education toward private and public higher education institutions are studied. Special attention is paid to the questions of morale and ethics in American universities. It is stated that universities’ codes of ethics and codes of professional ethics of administrative and teaching staff serve as a solid foundation for prevalence of high morale, ethics, honor and goodness in many American educational establishments.

This textbook can be used in pedagogical universities, institutes and colleges, as well as during education of other majors in Ukrainian higher education establishments. The materials of this book may be used as editions to textbooks used in preparation of students of bachelor’ and master’s levels of pedagogical, social sciences and other majors during such classes as: history, foreign history, cultural studies, pedagogy and psychology of higher education, theory and practice of pedagogy, comparative pedagogy, philosophy of education, management and entrepreneurship in education. This textbook may be helpful for professionals in areas of education, higher education, as well as graduate students and researchers.
