On October 25, 2024, our university community joined the annual National Unity Radiodictation, an event that has become a symbol of support for the Ukrainian language and national identity. This day unites Ukrainians worldwide, reminding us of the power of words and the importance of our native language. Many of us felt a sense of excitement as we picked up a pen and paper to test our knowledge and support this symbolic flashmob.
The first National Unity Radiodictation in Ukraine took place in November 2000, initiated by Ukrainian Radio. The idea arose in response to the need to preserve and popularize the Ukrainian language in an independent Ukraine. Originally launched to promote literacy, this event quickly grew into a large-scale social flashmob, uniting people of all ages, backgrounds, and regions. The Radiodictation has allowed everyone to participate in a national celebration of the written word, regardless of location—whether at home or abroad.
The main goal of this event is to remind us of the value of the Ukrainian language as a key attribute of national identity. Participants not only test their own knowledge but also experience a sense of unity with everyone who supports our native language.
With each passing year, the National Unity Radiodictation has evolved. In today’s world, where digital technology has become an integral part of our lives, the event has gained even more popularity through online broadcasting. Ukrainian Radio provides access to the dictation via radio, television, and the internet, allowing Ukrainians from all over the world to join in real time. Importantly, this event includes not only participants from Ukraine but also the vast Ukrainian diaspora worldwide. It is a unique phenomenon where a linguistic flashmob unites entire generations of Ukrainians and those who cherish Ukrainian culture.
In recent years, the National Unity Radiodictation has transformed from a simple language test into a symbol of unity and solidarity. Everyone who takes part, regardless of their familiarity with linguistic nuances, joins a larger national community. Participants have the opportunity to check their results, discuss mistakes, and improve their knowledge, making this event both beneficial and engaging.
This year, participation in the Radiodictation became especially significant for Ukrainians. In a time when the question of national identity has taken on new meaning, the Radiodictation has become a true symbol of unity. We are proud that our community actively supported this initiative. Together with millions of Ukrainians worldwide, we reminded ourselves and others of the importance of our native language and culture.
